Webinar 1: Vocabulary Instruction – Why it matters? 

PRESENTER: Dr. Janice Dole (Ph. D., Education, University of Colorado), is Professor of Education and Director of the Reading and Literacy Program in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah.

CONTENT: Vocabulary that students need to know to be successful in schools, universities and careers.  Dr. Dole explains the research on how students acquire vocabulary and the conditions under which students’ vocabulary grows. She then presents five strategies that teachers can use to help their students develop their vocabulary and learn new words at a deep level.

Webinar 2: Enhancing Comprehension Through Active Engagement with Text. Part 1: Visualizing, Activating Prior Knowledge and Monitoring for Understanding

CONTENT: Rationale for helping students acquire strategies they can use independently to engage in comprehending text. Dr. Lauritzen presentS examples related to the strategies of visualizing, activating prior knowledge and monitoring for understanding. 

PRESENTER: Carol Lauritzen,  (Ph. D., Education, University of Missouri-Kansas City), is a Professor of Literacy Education at Eastern Oregon University.  She has also served as Director of Teacher Education and Associate Dean of the College of Education at the same university.

Webinar 3: Enhancing Comprehension Through Active Engagement with Text. Part 2: Inferring, Asking Questions & Determining Importance 

 

CONTENT: Instructional approaches to enhance students’ comprehension through active engagement with text. Dr. Larson presents instructional approaches related to the cognitive reading strategies of inferring, asking questions and determining importance.   

PRESENTER: Mindy Legard Larson, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Literacy Education and Elementary Education Coordinator at Linfield College in Oregon. Dr Larson teaches literacy methods courses to pre-service teachers
