I agree with the benefits outlined and I think also that there are benefits from the experience and education of others ; from the encouragement that comes from sharing in the same profession; and importantly I believe that a feeling of professionalism and sense of vocation is received.  All these things lend themselves to taking a greater pride in the profession and in one's self as well.
