This is great research with thought- provoking statistics. Although I welcome the recommendations I can see that there would be heavy objections to 'periodic classroom observations' at my school. This is not done often and the majority of teachers frown on being observed. Ironically though, this indeed improves classroom practice and productivity. The fostering of new forms of teacher training would work in my setting, thereby setting the stage for classroom observation later on. This article has compelled me to examine my own practice and encouraged me to be more mindful of how much time I spend in instruction. This type of information should be used as a benchmark in schools in the region so teachers can measure and be mindful of their time spent in actual instruction and improve their productivity.
