IDB Education Newsletter on Equity: How different is learning between the rich and the poor?

How different is learning between the rich and the poor?

This edition of the newsletter of the Education Division at the Inter-American Development Bank presents the stories of Agustin and Daniel: two boys who are born the same day but have very different school experiences and learning opportunities. Agustin belongs to the richest 20% of the region's population and Daniel to the poorest 20%. These boys enter school with marked differences in their skills and, throughout their school years, the learning gaps between them grow larger and continue to expand for the rest of their lives. The stories of Daniel and Agustin are similar to those of millions of students in the region.

The Education Division at the Inter-American Development Bank works to promote effective teaching and improve the quality and equity of learning for all children and youth in the region. We work so that Daniel and Agustin can have equal learning opportunities.

We devote this newsletter to show learning gaps between children and youth of different socioeconomic status. Although Latin America and the Caribbean have improved in terms of access to education, differences in learning between rich and poor students persist. In the region, gaps begin before children enter school and continue to expand for the rest of their adult lives.
