Welcome

“Critical Thinking for Teachers” is a series of interactive radio programs and podcasts. These audio programs strengthen teachers’ ability to teach critical thinking skills in mathematics, literacy, science, and citizenship education. Woven into an entertaining drama series, the participatory lessons feature short pauses that allow teachers to respond to questions, partake in group discussions, write plans for their classes, and more. Participants learn practical skills to apply in the classroom immediately.

Audio 6: There are some good points outlined, as well as examples of how to use informal assessment. It can be difficult to incorporate informal assessment in the class when you are required to produce recorded grades on a monthly basis. These type of assessment takes time, which I like doing because it can really help to develop the students interest in the subject area/content, when they can become intimate with the material and not just route learning. Another issue with informal assessment that many administration have, is it validity. What is more important having the students recalling what they know on a test paper, of having them completing a task where they have to use their knowledge to explain, create, design and present their information.

I have found listening to audio 5, to be the most fulfilling audio I have listened, because I felt like it was specifically speak to me. I have taught a lesson on the Scientific Method and it was not as engaging as the example depicted in this audio. I did some reflection and took some notes and most definitely will be trying Ms Brown's approach when I go and teach my students about plants this semester.

After listening to audio #5, which focus on the scientific method, I find this to be very useful in doing a research paper in whatever subject area. I believe that the learning objectives must take into consideration a phenomenon that the students seek to investigate about a particular topic/subject area then launch an extensive investigation. In this process the learner will identify the problem, make a prediction, gather data, review the hypothesis which is the prediction made in advance before results are established or reached. After the hypothesis review then a conclusion will be drawn from the problem that the learner seek to investigate. This aspect is a very important aspect of helping students to develop critical thinking skills.

Greetings to you Monique, its is essential that students understand the rubrics as well. I usually tell my learners what exactly it is I will be grading them for and also the marks allotted to each task/activity. Assessment in a knutshell is basically ensuring that you properly test students on what was taught in the lesson, while evaluation is looking on you the teacher as well as students to see if learning objectives were adequately met.

I have now realized how beneficial rubrics are for both teachers and students alike though in the secondary system we seldom make students aware of rubrics. I think i am now a bit clearer on the difference between assessment and evaluations. I am seeing the clear connections among the assessment using questions that foster critical thinking. I have been consciously writing plans to ensure that the element of CT is included.

Hello all,

Your comments and discussions are helping me a great deal and I absolutely agree that like Ms. Brown and Ms. Domingues preparing students for exams is essential; preparing them for exams and beyond is most imperative.

I am a first-year student teacher who has just started writing lesson plans, this programme is helping me tremendously for what I will do in the near future and even now in how innovatively I put together lessons.

Dear All

I wanted to share with you the opening of our Teacher Resource Center. This is a virtual space for you to find and upload lesson plans.

I strongly encourage you to visit this site and above all to share and upload your own new plannings, in that way you would be making a huge impact on education all over the world, literally.

Dear All

It is very rewarding to read your comments about your learning and the actual help we are providing.

Please, would it be possible that you share some comments about the experience in the classroom? is there any class or activity you have already implemented based on Socratic Method or any other element you have learned here? what about your students, how are they reacting to these practices?

Best
