The legal and policy framework around women's rights and gender equality in the Americas is the strongest in the world after Western Europe.

Legally, that is, on paper, women enjoy a wide range of rights on equal terms with men.

But the persistent gap between women's rights on paper and their rights in practice is one of the biggest obstacles to sustainable development, effective democratic governance and human security.

In closing this gap, the role of education is fundamental.
