Course objectives
This course aims to strengthen the professional development of participants through the achievement of the following specific objectives:
- To incorporate democratic values and principles into their classroom practice
- To apply democratic values and principles in their interactions with others in their respective communities.
- To promote development and practice of the values and ideals of democratic citizenship in students
- To facilitate the organization of democratic classrooms and schools
- To expand the scope of teacher professional development thereby enhancing teacher competence and teaching effectiveness
- To contribute to developing and sustaining democracy in the region through the formal education system
Target Group: Ideal course participants may belong to one or more of the groups described here:
- Classroom teachers and teacher educators from English speaking Caribbean Countries who are currently teaching different school subjects
- Non-formal educators, public officials, academics and consultants who are currently working or had previous experience in the field of teachers´ professional development and curriculum development, in particular in the social studies area and/or in education for democratic citizenship, citizenship education, civic education or global citizenship education.
Study Venue: The course will be delivered entirely online (Internet) through the Virtual Classroom of the Educational Portal of the Americas. It requires a minimum weekly commitment of 14 hours of asynchronous (non-simultaneous) work, as well as basic computer skills such as handling e-mail, word processing and internet research. The Virtual Classroom has a user manual and a help tool. Throughout the course, an expert tutor will support and guide participants to facilitate all levels of learning. Duration: Eight (8) weeks
Cost:
- The tuition cost for this course is USD $400 (four hundred dollars).
- For participants who fulfill all the requirements and are selected to receive the financial aid provided by the OAS, the tuition cost for the course is USD $150 (one hundred and fifty dollars).
- For this edition we are also offering a special discount of 50% for participants from the Caribbean. In this case the total cost of the course for participants from the Caribbean who fulfill the registration requirements is USD $75 (seventy five dollars).
