With the aim to contribute to the debate about the importance of art and communications media in the strengthening of democratic values, the Organization of American States is pleased to present the portfolio of promising experiences of policies, programs and initiatives, entitled “The Role of the Arts and  Communication Media in Education for a Democratic Citizenship.”

This portfolio is a result of the willingness to cooperate expressed by Ministers of Education and Culture and the Inter-American Committee on Culture, through their project “Fostering Cultural Diversity and Creative Expression through Education: Sharing Good Practices”, and by the Inter-American Committee of Education, through their project “The Role of the Arts and Communication Media in Promoting Education
in Democratic Values and Practices among Children and Youth: Implications for Research, Politics and Practice.”

This portfolio identifies and gathers 14 promising experiences that show how governments, civil society organizations and private entities have positioned the arts and communications media as fundamental axes for the development and practice of citizenship competencies of children and youth.

The publication of this portfolio not only contributes to increasing the visibility of promising experiences, but also, based on the analysis of their results, challenges and learned lessons, to creating spaces and mechanisms that promote an informed and plural dialogue, as well as collaborative and cooperative actions among different institutions in OAS member states.
