A recent publication highlights an innovative approach to assessing children’s proficiency in reading and math in several countries across South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Citizens’ groups use rigorous sampling methods to assess for themselves what their children are able to do. The new approach has the benefit of putting children’s learning at the center of discussion and engaging citizens in understanding their schools.
